Another continent, so close by. Make a day-trip to the other side, to the mainland opposite of Kos: visit Turkey, spend a day at Bodrum. Find out the differences and the similarities.
The Greeks still call it "Halikarnassos", its name in the "old days" when Minor Asia was a part of Greece. Nowadays Bodrum is a small Turkish city (20.000 inhabitants) with many remains of the past, like the mausoleum, the amphitheater and the castle of the knights of St. John. Especially the last one is impressive, you can hardly oversea it. The fortress, very well preserved, welcomes you at the harbor-entrance in a majestic way. Wander around the big walls and don't forget to visit the two museums (the archeological "underwater" museum and the museum of the princess) inside the castle. The center of Bodrum consists of many small typical Turkish shops. The local shop-owners are friendly and hospitable and for sure they will invite you to try their apple tea.
The duration of the trip is about 50 minutes.
Duty free allowances from Turkey in to Greece are one 1lt of spirits and one carton of cigarettes. Greek customs are very strict regarding duty free allowances. The guests have to bring their passports with them in order to travel.
